Mostly I was just curious if there were other arsians out there that, like myself, have played Zangband (and its predecessors) more than any other game that has ever been out.

Another cool feature is that you can open up lots of windows and position them however you like across your monitor, or like in my case if you have two monitors, you can have many windows spaning both monitors. In fact, in my frequent waits for good games to come out, I always find myself reverting back to Zangband to pass the time.Īs you can see, there are some basic tile graphics that you can use, but the games is much better just using ansi graphics. I have been playing Zangband for years and years. Further, the amount of character custimization is not even remotely matched by any other comerical game out there. Zangband also modified the magic system so that the spells were loosely based off of Magic The Gatherings notion of majic realms. The neat thing about these games is that they are based off of the Tolken world (amongst many other sources) for their monsters, races, weapons, etc. Then I remember playing Moria, which was modified into a game called Angband and finally into the best current variant of Angband (in my opinion), Zangband. After Rogue came out, there was a game called nethack, and I think Larn showed up at the same time. The first of these games I can remember playing was called Dungeons and Dragons (I think, as it was based directly offa dungeons and dragons the role playing game).
Generally they are freeware and have been written not only by a single person, but in a fashion similar to Linux, by the community at large.Īges ago, the game of Rogue (while not actually be the first of its kind) pretty much revolutionized this type of game. If you are not familiar with these types of games, they are text-graphical based. I was curious if there was anyone else out there that had an obsession with these types of games.
